Diazoxide, a KATP Channel Opener, Prevented Ethanol-Induced Gastric Ulceration in Rats

Ethanol-induced acute gastric ulceration (EIGU) is widely studied. ATP dependent potassium channel (KATP) modulators are thought to interfere with some physiologic functions of the stomach. We have studied the effects of different doses of KATP modulators (diazoxide as agonist and glibenclamide as antagonist) on EIGU in rats. Gastric lesions were quantified. Fasting blood glucose (FBS) levels w...

Effect of Aspirin on Gastric Secretion.

It has been known for many years that ingestion of aspirin is frequently followed by damage to the gastric mucosa. Douthwaite and Lintott (1938) and Weiss, Pitman, and Graham (1961) have observed gastroscopically haemorrhagic erosions in the stomach after administration of aspirin. The effect of aspirin on the stomach of experimental animals has been documented in a large volume of literature f...

Effect of five salicylate-containing compounds upon loss of 51chromium-labelled erythrocytes from the gastrointestinal tract of normal man.

The adverse effects of salicylates upon the gastrointestinal tract of both man and experimental animals have been documented in numerous reports. These studies indicate that salicylate ingestion frequently causes various upper gastrointestinal symptoms (Caravati and Cosgrove, 1946; FreemontSmith, 1955; Muir and Cossar, 1955; Waterson, 1955; Lange, 1957b; Batterman, 1958; Muir and Cossar, 1959),...

Correlation of quantitative changes of gastric mucosal glycoproteins with aspirin-induced gastric damage in rats.

Quantitative changes of gastric mucosal glycoproteins with the gastric damage induced by acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) in rat have been studied. Gastric injury was easily observed macroscopically within one hour after the oral administration of aspirin. The most striking changes occurred at five hours, and the injury was overcome within nine hours after dosing. The glycoproteins extracted from...

Salicylate effects on a monolayer culture of gastric mucous cells from adult rats.

Aspirin, acetyl salicylic acid, damages gastric mucosal cells. This effect is considered related to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. On the other hand, sodium salicylate has been reported to be cytoprotective against drug damage to gastric mucosa in vivo. One reason for this difference is that salicylic acid, unlike acetyl salicylic acid does not inhibit prostaglandin synthesis by gas...
